INSTRUCTIONS

VELVIT OIL APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

Apply the oil to the wood surface; allow it to penetrate 30 to 45 minutes. If the surface dries out, apply more Velvit Oil to keep the surface wet at least  30 minutes. At this point you can wet sand if you want. I prefer to wet sand on the second coat.    If the surface gets tacky or dries out while you are wet sanding, apply a little more oil. Wipe with a soft cotton cloth, removing the excess. It is important not to allow the oil to still look wet on the surface. This will cause shiny spots.

One or two coats are usually enough for any project. Since it is a penetrating finish, it will not peel, crack or wrinkle. It is resistant to alcohol, hot liquids, and many common stains.

The pigments combined with Velvit Oil colors penetrate together with the oil. This bonds in the color, producing a beautiful color fast durable finish.

***IMPORTANT WARNING **  When wet, the oil soaked rags can spontaneously combust. Dry any oil soaked rags  either on a safe open surface like a gravel driveway or put in a bucket of water. Follow instructions on the can.

FLOOR APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

First of all, if you only have a little piece of floor to finish and you don't mind spending time bent over or on your knees, you can apply the Velvit Oil  as you would for a piece of furniture.

For a large floor, you will need a buffer, lambs wool applicator with form and handle, #2 steel wool pads to fit your buffer, cotton rags, a container to hold about 1/2 gallon of oil to make application easier, and some plastic bags for disposal of the DRY steel wool pads and to roll the buffer on at the end of each application.

***IMPORTANT WARNING **  When wet, these steel wool pads and rags can spontaneously combust. Dry any oil soaked rags or pads either on a safe surface like a gravel driveway or put in a bucket of water. Use adequate ventilation when applying.

I am unable to tell you how many steel wool pads you will need as it is a function of how much oil is left on the surface after penetration.  It will have to be removed. When the steel wool pad starts throwing drops of oil after it has been used awhile, it is time to either turn the pad over or remove it. You can clean the lambs wool applicator with mineral spirits. We use a white Scotch Brite pad between the buffer's coarse bristled disc and the steel wool pad. The rags are for wiping the oil up around the edges and corners. If there are areas in which the applicator won't fit, you can apply the oil with a rag. All the supplies except the oil and garbage bags can be bought from a flooring supply store.

The steps we follow when finishing a floor are as follows:
               1.  After the floor has been sanded and all scratches removed, we screen with 80 grit and 120 grit. This is not necessary if the sanding job is so good
that there are no marks left.

               2.  Do not walk on a freshly sanded floor with bare or socked feet. The moisture will affect the final result. Wear clean shoes.
Do not roll anything over the sanded floors as the marks will show up.

               3.  Apply the finish with the lambs wool applicator. You want to get good penetration with the first coat but you don't want to apply more than the
                      wood will soak up.

                  4.  You can walk on the wet surface to spread the finish from the areas where the oil is not soaking in to where it is needed.

               5.  I am unable to give you a good waiting time before you remove the oil because of differences in drying conditions. If you begin to remove the oil and
droplets are thrown from the pad, you need to give it more time. If you have been removing the oil and drops are slung after you have been
buffing for awhile, the pad is full. You need to turn it over to the unused side or put a new one on. If the steel wool pad starts grabbing, add a
little oil or mineral spirits to thin the oil on the floor a little.

               6.   Use either a cotton rag or a handful of steel wool to remove the oil from the corners and edges.

               7.   If for some reason you need to walk on the floor where the oil has been buffed up, you will need to cover your tracks with some more oil or
swing the buffer to spread oil where you just walked.

               8.   Allow the oil to dry at least 8 hours before applying the second coat.

               9.   The second and any subsequent coats should be applied very sparingly as most will not penetrate.

               10.  The longer the finish can cure before you walk on the floor the better. I like a minimum of 24 hours.

               11.  Call me if you have any questions. 804.758.2929

***IMPORTANT WARNING **
When wet, these steel wool pads and rags can spontaneously combust. Dry any oil soaked rags or pads either on a safe open  surface like a gravel driveway or put in a bucket of water. Use adequate ventilation when applying.

CABIN and DECK APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

***IMPORTANT WARNING **  When wet, rags or any other finish soaked items can spontaneously combust. Allow any oil soaked rags or pads to dry either on a safe open surface like a gravel driveway or put in a bucket of water. Use adequate ventilation when applying.

Apply Velvit Cabin and Deck Finish to clean unpainted and unsealed surfaces. Allow the wood to dry 2 or 3 days after it rains. Morning dew should be allowed to dry off for a few hours before application. Temperature should be between 50 and 90 degrees. Apply in the shade if possible. Mix pigment thoroughly and stir often during application. Cabin and Deck Finish can be brushed or sprayed on. DO NOT allow the first coat to dry before applying the second coat.

Clean up with Mineral Spirits or Paint Thinner. Follow all directions and warnings on the container.

We dipped our siding twice. To do this we built a collection/dipping form that could hold about 25 lengths of siding to drain and be dipped. Call me if you want more information. 804-758-2929

VELVIT AQUA SHIELD APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS.

This is a ready to use waterborne, self linking alpha urethane-acrylic composition. It provides outstanding chemical, water, and mar resistant properties. It excels as a wood coating suited to a variety of applications and dries very rapidly, allowing for several coats to be applied during the same day.

For turners who want a durable finish without the color change caused by many other finishes, this product does the job.

I use it on any light or white wood which I want to remain light. I do not use it on dark wood where the figure is important. As with other waterborne finishes, it does not show the figure of the wood off best.

I rapidly coat all surfaces with ample Aqua Shield. I want to get maximum penetration. Since it is almost water-like, penetration is rapid.  If finishing a very large piece, I will work on the inside first and then the outside. As with all waterborne finishes, the first and sometimes the second coat will raise the grain. I use a fine sandpaper, usually 600 grit, to smooth the grain back down after each coat has dried. The sanding also will prevent the piece from becoming shiny, which is important to get the look I want. Once there is no more penetration, I will often apply one more final coat, quickly wiping off any extra with a cotton rag. After the last coat has dried, I lightly sand the piece with 600 grit paper and then apply a wax appropriate to the use of the piece. The application of wax will round out the look giving it a look similar to porcelain, at least in my opinion it does.

VELVIT LEMON OIL DUST RAG AND GUNSTOCK APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

Dust Rag - Mix two cups of hot water with 1/4 cup Velvit Lemon Oil. Saturate a clean soft cloth. Squeeze out the excess and hang to dry. You can re-vitalize an old pre-treated cloth in this manner. Launder and repeat the process as often as necessary. I keep my dust cloth in a Zip Loc bag in the refrigerator door so I can find it when I want it. Velvit Lemon Oil will not build up and does not contain beeswax, silicones, or solvents.

Gunstocks - Apply 2-3 coats of Velvit Oil each a day apart, wet sanding each coat with 320 grit wet/dry paper. Then apply as many coats of Velvit Lemon Oil as you want, wet sanding each application with 1000 - 1500 grit wet/dry paper. Each coat should be applied approximately a day apart. The author of this process uses 7 coats or more.
